βOur family home of 5 generations has been rented since WW2.
My great grandfather, an orphan who aged 12 walked to Southend from London to start a new life, was given the opportunity to buy the house for Β£600, but it would have been a stretch financially, plus he was a staunch socialist and believed he would be getting ideas above his station.
Since then many landlords have come and gone and our security as tenants has been precarious to say the least.
A large framed photographic portrait of an unknown man found in the attic has been a constant reminder that our home is not our own.
The image of his face has been painted with a mixture of oil and ground particles of the disintegrating picture backing. The shower curtain evokes a sense of vulnerability and impermanence, whilst the meat hooks represent our familyβs perpetual wait on tenterhooks - we will not be dragooned.β

Collaborative interactive light sculpture taking inspiration from the old site of the Chalk-lined well that gave the local area its name. The original chalk well is directly underneath the floorboards beneath the sculpture. Viewers are encouraged to make a wish using the paper discs and throw into the βwellβ after pressing the button. The series of emergency lights are activated for 15 seconds before automatically turning off.

The family motto of the original owner of Chalkwell Hall, as discovered by Rachel Lichtenstein, author and archivist. In 2008, Rachel was invited for a residency to help Metal uncover the history of Chalkwell Hall. The motto has been reinstated in the foyer of the building, providing inspiration and encouragement for those who use the space today.
